Straight answers to the questions decorators and brand buyers ask most about Direct-to-Film printing — how it works, how it compares to screen printing and DTG, and what CPSIA Prop 65 compliance actually requires when you decorate children's apparel.
Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing prints artwork onto a coated film using water-based pigment inks, applies a hot-melt adhesive powder to the wet ink, cures the powder, and then heat-presses the finished transfer onto a garment. Unlike screen printing it requires no screens and no per-design setup, and unlike direct-to-garment it needs no pretreatment and works across cotton, polyester, and blends. A complete DTF operation runs four consumables: ink, film, adhesive powder, and cleaning or maintenance solutions.
It can be, but only when the specific consumables used are documented as meeting CPSIA requirements — including the stricter limits that apply to products intended for children under 12 — and the applicable Prop 65 standards. Safety is a property of the exact ink, powder, and film in the transfer, not of DTF as a method. Decorators supplying children's apparel need documentation covering the materials that actually went into the goods, and lot-level traceability so a specific garment can be tied back to a tested batch. CPSIA is the U.S. federal law governing children's products, setting limits on lead, phthalates, and other substances and requiring certification and traceability for goods intended for children under 12. California's Proposition 65 separately requires warnings for listed substances. For a DTF decorator both apply to the finished decorated garment, not just to the raw consumables — which means the ink, adhesive powder, and film all sit inside your compliance scope. In practice you need current Safety Data Sheets, third-party test evidence, a Children's Product Certificate where applicable, and the ability to trace a finished garment back to the specific lots used.
At minimum: a Children's Product Certificate (CPC) for the finished product, based on third-party testing by a CPSC-accepted laboratory; supporting test evidence covering the materials used, including ink, adhesive powder, and film; current Safety Data Sheets for each consumable; Prop 65 evaluation where California sales apply; and lot records linking finished goods to the material batches behind them. A supplier's documentation does not by itself certify your finished garment — the CPC obligation sits with the party placing the product on the market. Start with the Safety Data Sheet. Any supplier selling ink for production use should be able to produce a current SDS immediately and without negotiation — if one cannot be produced, treat the product as undocumented regardless of what the marketing says. Read the composition disclosure rather than the front label: terms like “non-toxic” and “eco-friendly” are not regulated in this category and carry no defined meaning. Then ask for third-party test evidence against the standards that apply to your end use, and confirm the documentation references the lot you actually received rather than a generic product-level statement.
Screen printing remains more economical on very large runs of a single design, where setup cost spreads across thousands of pieces, and it holds an edge on large spot-color solids and specialty inks. DTF wins on high-detail and full-color artwork, short runs, on-demand and one-off orders, frequent design changes, and mixed-fabric jobs, because there are no screens and no per-design setup. The practical break-even depends on run length, color count, and how often designs change; many shops run both and route each job by economics rather than choosing one method.
DTG prints directly onto the garment and generally requires pretreatment, performing best on cotton. DTF prints onto a film that is then heat-pressed, which removes the pretreatment step and works across cotton, polyester, and blends without changing process. DTF transfers can also be printed in advance and pressed later, which suits fulfillment operations that batch production separately from order flow. DTG can produce a softer hand on cotton; DTF offers broader fabric range and a simpler workflow.
