Watch: We Asked Retailers If Their Shirts Were Safe

Compliant versus non-compliant material is not an abstract distinction. It comes down to a question any shopper could ask: you buy this shirt — is it actually safe?

We were curious what brands and retailers would say if someone simply asked them. So this past summer we had a couple of interns start calling. In several cases they bought the shirt first, then called back in and asked a plain question: this shirt I bought for a toddler — is this safe?

In 90% of cases, the retailer could not answer. They did not know. They could not find out. Several promised a follow-up by phone or email and never sent one.

That is worth sitting with, because none of those people were being evasive. The information simply was not available to them. The compliance data stopped somewhere upstream and never reached the person actually selling the garment to a parent.

Which is why holding retailers accountable for compliance — not just for quality — matters. Ask the question. If the answer is a promise to check, note whether the answer ever comes. That silence is data.
