Watch: “Our Vendor Never Told Us” Is Not a Legal Defense
Do you have a lawyer on retainer? Most decorators do not — and that is exactly the point.
Shein is currently facing a major lawsuit over allegations of toxic materials in its apparel. A company at that scale is built to absorb a fight like that. It has counsel, budget, and process already in place for the day a claim arrives.
Most of the shops reading this do not. Which makes vendor vetting less of an administrative chore and more of the actual thing standing between you and a problem you cannot afford.
Because here is how it plays out if it ever gets that far: “our vendor never told us it was toxic” is not a defense. It is an admission that nobody checked. The obligation to know what is in the product you put your name on does not transfer up the supply chain just because someone gave you a verbal assurance.
The practical takeaway: vet your vendors properly, and keep the documentation. It protects you, it protects your employees, and it protects the end customer wearing the finished garment — in that order of proximity, and all three at once.
